What is Individualized Skills Practice?
All students, regardless of their literacy skill level, need purposeful practice that is goal-oriented and provides practice on the right skills at the right time. With Renaissance’s Individualized Skills Practice, all students—whether they are learning to read or already independent readers who are reading to learn— have access to an individualized practice experience that helps them acquire and build fluency in essential reading skills.
What is Lalilo?
Lalilo provides individualized skills practice in foundational literacy skills for students who are learning to read. The content covers standards and skills typically taught in grades K–2 with a focus on word recognition, however, many students in grades 3+ continue to need support with these skills.
What is Freckle ELA?
Freckle ELA provides individualized skills practice for students reading to learn; that is, students who can read independently. The bulk of Freckle ELA’s content covers standards and skills in grades 3–8 and focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing conventions, and applied reasoning.
What are the skills covered in Freckle & Lalilo?
Freckle’s ELA Scope and Sequence
How should I use Lalilo and/or Freckle ELA in my grade level?
How do I know when students should transition from Lalilo to Freckle ELA?
Situation 1: A new Star score is available
- If a student’s Star Unified Scaled Score is between 900 and 1,000, we recommend that teachers transition students from Lalilo to Freckle ELA as students should have mastered most of the foundational skills of learning to read that are covered by Lalilo.
- If a student’s Star Unified Scaled Score is higher than 1,000, we recommend that teachers immediately transition students from Lalilo to Freckle ELA as students have mastered the foundational skills of learning to read that are covered by Lalilo.
Situation 2: A student finishes Lalilo’s scope and sequence
- When a student masters the last lesson in Lalilo’s scope and sequence, the student’s teacher will be notified via email. We recommend transitioning this student to Freckle ELA.
How do I know when students should transition from Freckle ELA to Lalilo?
Situation 1
If a student has a Star Reading or Star Early Literacy score lower than 900 , we recommend this student work on Lalilo to support foundational skill practice and mastery. Once foundational skills have been mastered, they can transition back to Freckle ELA. Students with Star scores lower than 900 will automatically be placed into Lalilo’s scope and sequence.
Situation 2
If a student does not have a Star score and they are working on the foundational skills of learning to read (phonemic awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, fluency), we recommend working in Lalilo until they finish Lalilo’s scope and sequence.
Situation 3
When a student does not have a Star score and takes the Freckle placement test, if they score into Freckle Text Level 2A or below, they may benefit from reinforcement of foundational skills in Lalilo. They can take the Lalilo placement test to see which skills they might need more practice with.
