How do my students use QR codes to sign in?

Who can do this with default user permissions?

Teachers 

If your students were added through the Freckle dashboard, they will log in with a class code. If they are managed by Clever, ClassLink, or Renaissance Growth Platform, they can easily log in from their identity provider home page without a code.

Access and Print QR Codes

Every student on Freckle has a QR code. There are two ways to access these codes for classes.

  1. Log onto the Freckle teacher dashboard.
  2. Select Roster in the left navigation bar.
  3. To generate login cards for all of your classes at once, select Print login cards.

  1. Log onto the Freckle teacher dashboard.
  2. Select Roster in the left navigation bar.
  3. Use the Jump to Class drop-down list to select a class.
  4. Select the gear icon at the top right of the selected class list.
  5. Select Print Login Cards.

Signing In with a QR Code

  1. Go to student.freckle.com and select the QR code button at the bottom.

  2. If you haven't enabled your webcam on your Chromebook or other computer, you'll need to do that first. You won't need to do this step if you're on an iPad. Instead, you'll be asked to open your camera.

    Each browser looks a little different, but in general, you'll need to select Allow when it appears near the top of the page.

    If you're having trouble with your webcam, scroll down to learn how to enable it.
  3. Hold your QR code up to the camera.

    If you have student passwords enabled, you'll be prompted to enter your student password.

How Do I Enable My Webcam?

Using student mode on Chromebooks or other computers requires you to grant your browser access to your computer's webcam. If you've accidentally blocked access to the webcam, don't worry—it's easy to re-enable access. Follow the instructions for your browser below. 

On Chrome

Granting access to the camera:

  1. When you visit https://student.freckle.com, a tooltip should appear in the upper-left of your screen asking to use your camera. Select Allow.

If you hit block by mistake:

You know you've hit block by mistake if you see this page:

The message reads: Oh no! It looks like the camera isn't working!

  1. At the right side of the address bar, select the small icon that looks like a camera.

    The message reads: This page has been blocked from accessing your camera. The options below allow you to allow camera access for the website or to continue blocking access. A drop-down list lets you choose a camera if your comptuer has more than one. The Manage Media Settings and Done buttons are at the bottom.
  2. Select the Always allow option.
  3. Refresh the page.

If you don't see the icon mentioned above, or those instructions don't work:

  1. In the upper-right corner of the screen, select the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Show advanced settings.
  3. In the "Privacy" section, select Content settings.
  4. Scroll down until you see the "Camera" section.
  5. Select Manage exceptions.
  6. Select the X next to "https://student.freckle.com/#/login" to remove it from the list.
  7. Refresh the page.
  8. When you are asked for permission again, select Allow.

On Microsoft Edge

We do NOT actively support Microsoft Edge. It may not work properly.

Granting access to the camera:

  1. A tooltip should appear at the bottom of your screen asking to use your webcam. Select Yes.
  2. You will need to repeat this process every time you open the site.

If you accidentally close the tooltip:

  1. Refresh your page.
  2. When you are asked for permission again, select Yes.

On Firefox

Granting access to the camera:

  1. Just like in Chrome, a tooltip should appear in the upper-left corner of your screen asking to use your camera. Select Allow. 

    The message asks if you will allow Freckle's website to use your camera? A drop-down list lets you choose a camera if your comptuer has more than one. The Don't Allow and Allow buttons are at the bottom.

If you accidentally close the tooltip or select Don't Allow:

  1. Refresh your page.
  2. You will be asked for permission again.

On Safari

Unfortunately, student mode does not support the Safari browser. Please install Google Chrome or Firefox.

On Internet Explorer

Unfortunately, Freckle does not support the Internet Explorer browser. Please install Google Chrome or Firefox.
